Shortly after WWII Shepherd hosted a late night disc jockey program on Cincinnati radio broadcasting from Schuler's "Wigwam" restaurant. At midnight he invariably marked "The Witching Hour" with a stream of rhetoric for which he was famous. His gift of gab had to be among all the best of the founders of "Talk Radio".

Sunday Night 9-12 on WOR. the shows were great. Recorded some will have to look for old tapes if they survived. Wish I could listen now.

I used to listen to Jean Sheperd when I was in college.
My mother used to wait up for me when I went out on dates,
much to my chagrin. However, when I got home she'd be sitting there laughing like crazy. I'd sit there too and the two of us would have a cup of tea and listen. This
is one of the fondest memories I have of my mother who has
been gone now for 12 years. I'm going to buy some of his
tapes so I can go back down memory lane.

Just heard an old Shep show on WCNI the local college station. That took me back to the days when as I kid I would lay in bed with the lites out and listen to his stories on WOR -- what a treat to rediscover this after so many years!

I have no idea when I first heard Shep...it was the 50's (probably around '55 or so) and there was this guy who would tell stories about anything. He could do an hour on a worm he saw crossing a path. The most comfortable 'old sweater' voice and compelling delivery that you HAD to listen to. Being a New Yorker, I remember thinking HE had the funny accent...many years later, I was told I had the funny accent*...funny how that works. (*by an Australian Broadcaster of all people, John Bailey, and that I should go to Broadcasting School and get in the biz. I did.)
Thanks Jean for the first lessons....Doug Higley, LionPoint Studio

I have been trying to interest my 8 year old in reading, by reading her excerpts from Shep's books and not only has she made the connection from "christmas story" to what I listened to at her age, but she is a convert now and another generation will remember Shep

I don't remember just how I found out about Shep, but at the time I was an unofficial member of the Cornell Jazz Club in my hometown of Ithaca, NY. Shep was a DJ at one of the Philadelphia hotels and broadcast over KYW. I had my family's old console radio in my room and I strung a (long) longwire antenna, cut to KYW's frequency so I could pick it up better at that distance.
As the engineer of an on-campus radio studio (whilst still in HS), I had access to a fine disc lathe and spent much time making copies of music off the air. Shep never let me get a clean recording. He always talked over the start of any record he played.
I eventually made a pilgimage to Phila. to see his show.
Segue past a full Naval career, retiring in the 70's. Newly divorced and enjoying my newfound bachelorhood to the fullest. I seemed to have had many dates during that period, most starting after 10PM. I would drive to my date's house, sit out front in the car, listening to WOR and Shep's stories until signoff (at 10 PM). Then pick up date, visit bars, etc.
Now I want to hear him again and also find a copy of the Great American 4th of July and so on.

While dial twirling as a G.I. at Fort Knox, KY, looking for anything other than "chicken kickin'" music, I stumbled upon WOR and Shep from 1000 miles away. What a relief! I had listened to Shep in my former life as a civilian back home in Connecticut, so it was like being right there in my old room. I was able to introduce Shep to many new fatheads on those cloudy nights that WOR bounced off the atmosphere to Kentucky. Great memories!

I listened to Shep on my "transitor" radio every night growing up in NJ. I got to see him many times at his local appearances in NJ locations, Union Jr College and other local schools. Also met him at a few book signings and have his autographed copy of "In God We Trust" that I had him sign at the Toms River book store.

I can't believe that Shep is gone, I'm not in New York anymore, and that so many of the folks signing in discovered Shep so recently. What a blast listening to his opening music and blowing the kazoo again. I started my all-nighters by making a pot of coffee and hunkering down with him in the guise of studying. One of his monologues I couldn't find on this site dealt with tales of evil incarnate, - Dr. Fu Man Chu.

I stumbled onto this website looking for something else, but it caught my attention. I know of Jean Shepherd because he dated my Aunt (Dorothy Anderson - Martin) and was friends with my Father (Johnny Anderson) years ago. I have several letters that he wrote to Dorothy when he was in the army. By the way, I noticed in the glossary under "people" that you have listed that you are uncertain whether Dorothy and Johnny are real people or not...they are (or were in my Father's case) definitely real people.

My Mom got me hooked on Shep when I was in grammer school and I went to sleep listening to him until I went away to college. When I was in high school, I asked my Latin teacher to translate "In hoc agricula conc" and a smile came across her face - she was a Shep fan too.

I enjoyed Shep for many years while growing up in New Jersey in the 60's, then while attending Penn State in the early 70's (WOR did reach to State College, PA in those days), and finally after graduation while living in Norwalk, CT until he went off the air. In the mid-to-late 60's I spent many school nights, supposedly asleep, listening to Shep on a small crystal radio hidden from my parents. More than once I fell asleep and awoke with that little earphone still in my ear, sometimes pulled from its wire!

Your site is excellent. Excelsior!!

Boy I miss him. Found Shep one night spinning the AM dial on my Dad's marine radio. I was hooked. He took us through times and on journey's that we could only dream of. When he read Robert Service's "Dangerous Dan McGee" or told of Randy's escapades, he was the best.

The Great Shepherd lives on, along with Randy, Miss Shields,
Flick, Schwartz, Hammond, his mother with the rump-sprung bathrobe and the Old Man! He (and they) will never be forgotten. I think he was doing the all-nighter on WOR when I first heard him, but shortly after that, he was on from 11:15 PM, when the station brought in Long John Nebel. Went to see him frequently at the Limelight back in those days, too, but ad-lib radio was his true forte.

I grew up w/a small Sony radio under my pillow, listening in the dark to Shep on WOR.I always turn out the lights when I listen to his old shows, it just seems right tha way. In 1963 I made contact w/ him on Ham Radio and we talked for quite a while. It was a big thrill and I always cherish the memory. He brought a long forgotten world to life in our imaginations and somehow made our childhoods more special and poigniant.
