Almost afraid to look up the bio hoping he was still with us. But as long as there's a White Sox fan like his old man and as long as the Buick's block will still crack at 3AM he'll be there. What a great site!

I actually discovered Shep via Car & Driver Magazine sometime in the 70s or early 80s. He bacame the reason I bought the magazine. Then, I read more Shep in Playboy. He was an incredible talent. A genius. A wonderful storyteller. He meant a lot to me and I will never forget him. Thank you for this wonderful site. I've been here for hours tonight and will be back.

Listened to "Old Shep" many evenings on WOR from 10:15 -11:00PM. What a trip! Met him at a few of his NYC appearances. When he mentioned a "nose flute" on one of his broadcasts, I sent away for one, and forwarded it to him. Never heard whether he received it or not. Whatta man! Hey, where are Schwartz and Bruner?

I was raised in Union, NJ, hard by the Flagship and Denisons on Route 22, yet despite such proximity to the epicenter of American culture, it was my cousin Stuart from Tottenville who turned me on to Jean. My black leatherette Panasonic spewed Shep from 10:15 until 11, in the dark, the only listener in the world. Was anyone else in on the Limelight shows? My only appearance in the Ivy League was when I saw Jean at Princeton in the early '70s with my friend Howard. I loaned "In God We Trust..." to my lifelong friend Kurt who moved the next week and I haven't seen him or the book since, but even this Shep had prepared me for my friends.

My older cousin Stuart from Staten Island turned me on to Jean and I rarely missed the 10:15 pm start. It still thrills me to hear his voice and fondly remeber John Wingate's and Stan Lomax' wonderful voices. I loaned "In God We Trust" to my neighbor Kurt and never got it back! My daughter is addicted to the movie. Flick does, indeed, live. Is it possible to buy tapes or cds of the shows?

It was 1964 and I was fresh out of college and living in Arlington, VA. I was a long way from where I grew up on Chicago's southeast side right across the state line from Hammond. Tuning the radio own night I heard this voice with the definte nasal twang of someone from Chicago's "sout" side or across Stateline Road in Indiana. He sounded like me! I was hooked! From that night on, I listened to stories about Flick, Swartz, Cedar Lake, Used care lots on Stoney Island in Chicago, and a Daisy Red Ryder BB rifle. until I move back to Chicago in the late 60s - way out of the reach of WOR.

Never heard of Shep until his PBS TV shows aired in the '70's or 80's. Would give my left disgronificator for some video tapes or DVD's of these shows. As a former steel worker, I specially liked "The Phantom of the Open Hearth".

Our "Gang" discovered Shep while listening to the radio while sitting in Dad's old Chevy in the driveway at night in Middlesex, NJ. Tuning around the dial from "Cousin Brucie" and tuned into Shep. We were hooked instantly. Our neighborhood (Me, Nash, DelGobbo, Beilly) would gather around the radio in someone's room and sit mesmerized soaking it all in. Later, after college, I worked for a Utility company out of Hammond, Indiana. I actually worked with a guy that grew up with Shep, and he would recount tales of when they were kids. I love listening to the shows over the internet, and am sorry I didn't find this link till a few months ago, after Mr. Shepard's passing. He sure had a gift for telling a story.

I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to do an Internet search on Shep, but I was overjoyed to find the web site. It threw me back into my childhood bed in 1967, with my trusty clock radio on the night stand, lulling me to sleep listening to his stories. Unfortunately I only had the pleasure of his company for 4 years, before leaving NY for college. After that, I looked forward to his occasional articles in Playboy, but they were too far in between. Now, I can finally share Shep with my kids, and in the process they may learn that true humor is timeless.
Thanks.

Bought Jean Shepard dvd "complete" set of radio shows plus, after hearing Shep on a Vic and Sade compulation in 2006. Listen to about a half-dozen shows a a night now. Sometimes he was full of it, sometimes he was prosaic, but most of the time, he was just brilliant - up there with Paul Rymmer and Mark Twain! Some major radio net needs to begin reruns of his best shows.

Thanks for putting together this comprehensive site! When I was a teenager I missed uncounted hours of sleep as I lay with my ear next to a transistor radio, listening to him weave his tapestries of words and sounds. (I heard his shows on a local Public Radio station in the Washington, D.C., area.)

Saw Shep in concert at the Clinton Mill and Hunterdon Central HS when I was much younger, growing up in NJ. Listened to his WWOR show also--Vividly remember the episode where he describes Flick, Schwartz, and the gang consuming the contents of an medicine cabinet they found in a run-down house--and the hilarious aftermath

Shep makes me laugh like no one else can, quite possibly because, as a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's, I can relate all-too-well to his tales. Over the years, I've given his books as gifts time and time again to introduce a true American treasure to those poor souls who never had the good fortune to hear him on the radio or see him on TV. It's sad, but they don't make 'em like that anymore.

I was born in Chicago and worked in East Chicago & Hammond,IN. Hey! I lived in the neighborhood and worked in the areas that Jean described. It was like returning to my youth. My pals were just like his pals. What a great man and even greater AUTHOR. I only wish, I could have met him and told him how much his books meant to me and my children. I wish him eternal rest and as we say in the sea going trade "FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS" my dear friend and thanks for the many great stories.

I have cassette tapes from the 1980's with Wanda Hickey, The Great Gravy Boat and the Red Rider Stories among others. I would love to have CD recordings. I also recorded the Ollie Hopnoodles Haven of Bliss from Public TV back in the 1980's and The Fourth of July and Other Natural Disasters Movies. I wish these would come out on DVD. They were as funny as A Christmas Story. I grew up in Chicago and appreciate the sites and sounds of midwestern living!

As a gift from my fiance', while on a trip to Florida, I turned on my CD player and after "a pregnant pause" the theme song "Bahn Frei" and the gifted and talented voice of Jean Shepherd wafted from the speakers. I was instantly transported back to my childhood on Long Island, a transistor radio tuned to WOR hidden beneath my pillow, my mother a few steps down the hall believing her wonderful son was studying geography. Oh if she knew ... I was a part of the growing legion of Jean Shepherd devotee's and the terrific stories I would discuss with my boyhood chums the following day. Many a morning I would curse the sleep that had taken me from his story and run to a friend and ask, " How did it end?". Those WERE the good old days. I thank everyone who is involved in keeping Jean Shepherd's legacy alive. Excelsior! You Fathead!... Seltzer Bottle!
