This is great! Finding your(the Shepard)web site is like a time machine. I have been a fan since, as several article in the archives have described, sleeping at night with my transistor radio volume down low pretending to sleep and faithfully listening every night to the stories and his great american philosphy of life. My kids have only grown up with "The Christmas Story" and several of the other made for TV stories which I have on Video. The ability to have them listen and watch the many brilliant stories that Shepard provided over the years will only be deminished by the spontineity of his wit. I had the chance to participate in the 1967 Village Voice Automoblie Rally in Washington Square in which Shepard was the MC. I still remember him giving a brief history of each car as it came to the starting position and my pride as he was enthusiastic of my limited edition 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk that me and my friends from New Jersey entered in the Rally. (even though I finished "dead last"). I will continue to serf the Jean Shepard Web site, so far its brought back many memories, to see what his fans have assembled. Thank you for an early Christmas present

I posted a short note about Shep on e-ham.net and the response has been pretty amazing, some of the replies were from people that knew or worked with him but most of the others have the same story... transistor radio under the pillow.

God bless the memory of Jean Parker Shepherd! Some of the finest hours I ever spent in my kid-hood. I tell my children that what was so wonderful about Shep, was that his stories made me appreciate my childhood WHILE I was a child.
His memory lives on in millions of hearts he touched forever. Excelsior you fatheads!

I was listening to "Recuerdos de Alhambra" performed by Segovia; this brought back a small flood of memories, as this was to me Jean Shepherd's quintessential Cheap Guitar Music. So I searched Google for "cheap guitar music" and found this site! I used to listen to his Sunday night show on WOR (9 pm to 1 am). I'd love to find his long rap on his childhood 4th of July's. I also played the noseflute for some years, not badly, either! Thanks for this incredible web site.

Flick Lives! Shep, wherever you are, thanks for some really great times listening to you on WOR at night on an old Philco. Your shows always painted pictures in my mind...My brother and I listened intently...a real feat for teenagers. Excelsior!

My second posting but I remembered something from Shep history. Does anyone remember when Shep was on the old David Frost show? Frost was a Brit who eventually became famous for his Nixon interviews. Well, on the show Shep was ragging on the British and commented that when Churchill said "This was their finest hour" the Brits were getting the crap bombed out of them. You could see the blood drain out of Frost's face and he went right to commercial. When they came back Frost started to introduce the next guest completely ignoring Shep who assumed he had another segment. Shep did a great double take and Frost looked like an idiot. Another time I actually tuned into an episode of Hee Haw because they advertised that "Jean Shepherd" would be on - that's when I learned there was a female country singer with the same name. Bummer! Flick Lives.

First learned of Shep when I heard the opening theme wafting down the hallway from my Father's bedroom at 10:15pm every night on WOR. After the first listen I was hooked like everyone else. Was once falling asleep during a biology class in High School when the teacher mentioned a prize "with bronze oak leaf clusters". It snapped me back to reality and after class he confirmed he was a Shep fan. Instantly changed my opinion of him. Shep was the best ever.

I saw A Christmas Story, in the theater when it came out. I loved that story and the narrator. I moved to New Hampshire in 2005 and a New Yorker asked me if I ever heard of Jean Sheperd. I had no idea he was the narrator of the "A Christmas Story. I now own CD's of his radio broadcast and listen to them in the car all the time. The New Yorker who introduced me to the radio programs, grew up listening to "Shep" on a transistor radio under his pillow at night.

"A Christmas Story" is one of my husband's and my favorite movie to watch at Christmas. It's so like our own childhoods. I know I sent for the secret decoder rings and was so disappointed by it being a "lousy commercial."
Just saw the follow-up movie on TV tonight with one of the crappie stories in it. Wanted to see if I could find some more tapes of Shep and his stories. Found out he was a ham. My husband, Bruce, and I are hams as well:
I'm: K5CMB and Bruce is: W5BAB
I think I either heard his stories on TV or radio a long while ago and really enjoyed hearing him.
