A fellow student suggest I listen to Jean, when I was 13. He turned me on to talk radio and for that I thank you Robert Fleischer ... wherever you may be. Those were more genteel days,in terms of popular culture, but today I enjoy Micheal Savage as Jean's darker incarnation.

Hey Gang! When I was 8, laying in bed at night I would hear the opening music of Shep's radio show, the "riders up!" trumpet, playing on my parents radio tuned to WOR..I would find it on my radio expecting a horse race, but always it was this man's voice, so I never stayed...one night, the 4th of July the man's voice announced he was going to read Ludlow Kissel and The Dago Bomb etc. etc.
His voice that night was very conspiritorial...seductive, i a way I later learned was his trademark, the way he included all that were listening that..we were in on it too! As he unfolded the story of using fireworks as kid (something I had done that day), I nearly wet the bed from laughing so hard...
The next day my father gave me In God We Trust...my first adult book...I was hooked..later came Wanda Hickey and Ferrari in the Bedroom...
The last time I heard shep was a guest apperance here in NYC..a couple of radio jocks invited him to present his views on the state of radio today...he was very negative about the industry, much to their suprise...what did they expect? Shep had more creativity, sense of prescence, writing ability and genuine satire in his little pinky finger, than Howard Stern will achieve in 10 lifetimes of saying the word penis over the air and then snickering like a child who said a dirty word and got away with it.

Does anyone remember Shep hosting a Nightline back in the mid to late 80's? He was at home in Florida and it was a July 4th show. How appropriate! I worked the show and it was sad he was not given time to make his magic that night. He was taken too soon. We could really use him now. Thanks to all those that keep this and all the other sites alive remembering Jean and everything he's done. Exelsior Fathead!

I was given an 8 cd set of Jean's radio shows and the enclosed pamphlet referred to this site. As a kid, I used a surplus oven timer to turn on a reel to reel recorder to tape Jean when I couldn't be home. Sure wish I had kept some of them considering how many broadcast (thousands?) have been lost forever and they were all brilliant and priceless - Thanks for maintaining the site.

THIS A WONDERFUL SITE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALLOWING ME TO READ HIS WORKS AND HEAR HIS WORDS ONCE AGAIN. MY AREA DID NOT RECEIVE A STRONG SIGNAL FOR HIS RADIO SHOW FROM WOR RADIO, WHICH IS WHY I AM SO THRILLED TO BE ABLE TO HEAR HIS PERSONAL WAY OF TELLING A STORY, AND TO READ SO MUCH OF HIS WARM CHILDHOOD MEMORIES. I HAVE READ EVERY SHEP BOOK AND HAVE SEEN EVERY MOVIE, BUT NOW I CAN ACTUALLY GET TO HEAR SHEP'S RADIO SHOWS, WITHOUT ALL THE STATIC OR RADIO TROUBLES. GOD, I WISH PBS WOULD RERUN SHEP'S OLD SHOWS, FOR BIG FANS, LIKE ME.I HAVE SPENT HOURS AND HOURS ON THIS SITE ALREADY, AND I JUST DISCOVERED IT TODAY. MAY MR. I was eleven and living in Brooklyn when I first started listening to Shep. Listening late at night, when everyone else was asleep, was like an adventure. It was as if we were both under the covers with a flashlight, telling stories. I particularly remember the night he told the story of falling asleep on the subway and waking up in the lost subway station. His imagination seemed boundless. There are none like him left today.

I saw Jean at my college (RIT) around 1968 - I believe twice. While he gave his talk, he was being "translated" for the many deaf students in attendance (the National Technical Institute for the Deaf was and is part of the school.) He slowed down a few times to let the "signer" catch up, and then stopped all together after saying the word "ass," waiting and watching, and then saying something like "I wanted to see what the symbol for that was!"

For years listening to Shep was a must for me. He was an original & amusingly saw thru the shams of our wacky, shallow, materialistic culture; while he lovingly described his enthusiasms. He punctured the pomposities of the great, near great & wannabees but was never cruel. He never did a show that was not an outragious delight. After he was so shabbily treated by the ingrate suits at WOR, I rarely tuned into their programs as a silent protest.

I was lulled to sleep every night listening to Shep on WOR. Next day at school we would argue the merits of the purple death, the number of people really named orville and how close the word flick was to a four letter word. He was tops in my class at the Stuy and a group of us went to the Village Gate to see him.

The broadcasts available on this site are priceless. Like many here, I first encountered Shep on WOR. I was 12 or so and he was a constant companion throughout my teen years. A friend and I even went to book signing for Wanda Hickey! What a joy to hear him again and hear all of the subtle touches that flew over my head at least back then. Shep was on Larry King in the early days of cable and I called and asked him a question about his love of jazz - he took it the wrong way and thought I was inferring that there was no prep work done for his shows. All I meant to say was that I enjoyed the improvisatory feeling in his stories but I guess he wanted to make sure people understood the great deal of work and forethought that went into what he did. Wish I had written him a letter to explain...But back to the point - this website is a treasure and thank you to the folks behind it.

I can't believe it! OTHER people actually listened to him! Jean Shepherd was an absolutely formative experience for me. His rye sense of humor and mid-Western sensibility saved me from becoming an embarrassing, shallow knee-jerk liberal. (But I'm still a liberal.) I miss those nights listening to him under the covers, losing myself in his small-town working-class Depression-era life and his life in the military. The kazoo and the jew's harp, man, that brings back memories. There was none like him and never will be.

Shepherd had programs in the evenings on WOR, AM 710 in New York City. In Brooklyn, I was 13, going through miserable pre-adolescence, mostly going to school - at least two, sometimes three at a time! And, while doing lots of reading with a flashlight under the blanket in bed, I began to take a radio, and discovered the worlds of Long John Knebel...and Jean Shepherd. Everything changed...EXCELSIOR!!!!!!!

Thanks for the site!
It is 10:15 p.m. My father is driving us back home from his sister's house in Huntington, NY. I ask him to turn the radio to WOR so I can listen to Shep. My father demurred with the response: "You're not going to listen to that idiot again." I begged and he gave in. On comes the call to the races, with Shep as usual talking over the music. Of all nights, Shep decides to talk about the army, in particular, his time at Camp Crowder in Neosho, MO. Shep goes on to describe how on Friday night, 10,000 GI's would descend on the town to find the only girl left, a pimply-faced 14 year-old. My dad's face suddenly went completely slack. He was at Camp Crowder too. My dad never again said anything about my listening to Shep.

Wow - I can't believe I have managed to live 49 years - all on Long Island just outside NYC and never heard this wonderful story teller before today on NPR. How much more pleasant my childhood would have been had I known to slip my transistor radio under my pillow tuned to his voice. As it was - I relieved the fears and anxieties of depression and other symptoms of living in an alcholic household reading "Peanuts" and finding great solice in the foibles of Charlie Brown - sometimes till 2am - even on school nights....the boogyman doesn't care what night of the week it is you know. I am quite sure Jean Shepard's soothing voice and interesting tales would have gently settled my frightened child's soul. But - since I am a child at heart and - hard as I try not to do so - still carry some of the baggage of fear and anxiety of my youth - it seems Jean Shepard's work is not done. And even if my fears are subsided, he can provide a warmth in his story telling that will forever give me reason to stop and ponder what he said, how he said it and know that I have taken something special from it to carry within me always. What a gift. I can't wait to hear more and read more and just get to know what I have been missing.

I recall listening to Shep on WOR during the late 50's. I made it a point to listen to his Sunday late night shows whenever possible. All the current media attention to "Flash Mobs" made me think of Shep's invitations to listeners to go to a bookstore in Greenwich Village at a certain time to mill. He would probably be amused at seeing it all today. Who could ever forget his act of "Hurling an Invective", where he encouraged listeners to open their windows, place their radio on the sill, and turn the volume up all the way on the count of three? I also fondly remember his accounts of visiting Ham Radio operators in Hilversun, Netherlands. Neat stuff!

When I first re-discovered the existance of these old Shep shows on this site and ebay, my initial nostalgic exuberance was soon replaced by a new understanding and appreciation . When I was a kid, I delighted in Shep's parables but often only half listened to his "boring" ruminations .Now as I approach middle age (at about the same age Shep was in his prime); I find many of my own thoughts, experiences and suspicions articulated in a way that I could never have understood when "I was this kid". Each show is an essay unto itself to be digested and redigested. There is a universality about Shep's wisdom which makes it as current in 2004 as it was in 1964. For instance, take a listen to the Mass Backwards show of 1/27/2004(originally recorded 6/18/1968) or Shep's show from 8/4/1964 entitled Slobus Americanus (on FatHead Central). Sound familiar? They really could have been recorded yesterday. Flick Lives! Shep Lives!!!

While I enjoy reading the reminiscences posted here, I feel that the importance of this site goes beyond fuzzy nostalgia. As I have stated previously, the universality of Shep's wisdom is as pertinant in 2004 as it was in 1964. Take a look around, tell me the culture of Slobism hasn't taken over.. Slobus Uber Alles!! Slobs come in all shapes sizes, educatinal levels and poliitcal affiliations as do the non-slobs. Unfortunately in 2004, the slobs clearly have the upper hand (THey've run Congress since 1952 under the guise of various party affiliations).
So what do we do?? Keep your Knees loose gang, stay ready at third for that liner, and wait for the return of that hooded horseman flying the banner of...
EXCELSIOR!!!

I once wrote Shepherd a letter, which he quoted from on air, describing the enforced, mandatory pep-rally at our school. Of course, I'd love to find this show.

Gene's stories of Flik and Schwartz and his ol man were part of my upbringing. I truly listened with the pillow speakr (st times from acyrstal set) on WOR into Morristown NJ and Bellport Long Island.
Listeneing now to various MP3 recordings of the shows of 40 years ago only reaffirms the the inspriation Shep was and IS.

I first heard Shep at my older brother's house when I was about 10 years old. He became that voice in the night weaving wonderful tales. When I was in college I would go to see him at a club in the Village, a fantastic experience. It always seemed to me he never aged or changed. As soon as my kids saw A Christmas Story they were hooked too.I have bought his tapes from Schmid lending them to friends and family, and of course telling them to buy their own! This is a great site. Keep up the good work! Shep lives as long as we hear his voice.

1966 is approximate. When I first discovered Shep on my own, I recognized the voice, and realized that as a child my mother used to listen to Shep, and she probably listened to him in Philadelphia, where she lived before moving to New York. Somewhere in my own vast file of trivia I have a letter Shep sent me after I sent him a copy of a book "review" I wrote for our Jr. HS newspaper. Will send it when I dig it up.
