Shep grew up in Hammond Indiana
and constantly referred to the schools, classmates, and teachers on his
show and in his movies. |
Harding Elementary School
The famous Warren G. Harding School
where 'Flick got his tongue frozen to a pole and Miss Shields taught her
classes'.Shep attended
Warren G. Harding Elementary which was located only few blocks from his
house. The original building burned and was rebuilt at a new location
across the street in 1949. Extensions were added in 1957 and 1961. There
are currently plands to build a new structure. |

Harding Elementary School- The original school
that Shep attended was constructed in 1924 at 3107 Cleveland Street.
After a fire, a replacement structure built in 1949 at 3211 165th
Street, with additions made in 1957 and 1961. (Shown)
There are currently plans to build a new school.

list compiled of all the names he has mentioned. It is not known if they
were all real people except in the case of those marked *. Also, it may

"Hammond"... There are a lot of picture postcards complete with personal
stories about each. If you go to Goldblatt's, you'll see a historical
progression of Lion Dept Store, then Kaufman & Wolff, then Goldblatts.
If you check out "LUNCH" you'll see a spot about the Red Rooster.
Actually, one of our classmates' father owned the Red Rooster and is
putting together some photos, etc., so we can expand that page, too.

is unclear if he attended the University prior to his Army stint,
however, the University seems to confirm he attended there from 1949-50
in the bio provided during the awarding of his Doctorate in 1995.
"Prior to World War II, while attending
Indiana University, I jobbed around my native heath accompanied by a
somewhat eroded bass fiddle which provided a means of attaining social
success as well as tuition. After a three-year stint in the Signal Corps
where I was kept in the lowly rank of corporal by jealous commanding
officers, I was discharged by a grateful country and was free again to
plague entertainment-loving radio listeners." (Audio Magazine - March
1956)
In 1995 Shep Received a Doctorate of
Humane Letters from Indiana University
In the bio for the presentation it was noted "He returned to his native
soil to study engineering and psychology at the Indiana University
Calumet Center in 1949 and 1950."
